About our cause

My name is Annabel Foster and I am writing on behalf of Tina Williams, creator of The Pied Piper Theatre Company,

WHO WE ARE

The Pied Piper Theatre Company has been producing theatre for children since 1984. During that time we have reached over 500,000 audience members.

We produce a mixture of new writing, adaptations and published plays.

Each year our main tour, targeted at the 3-7 age range, travels to theatres and schools, aiming to reach as wide and diverse an audience within that age range as possible.

We have toured extensively to schools in the southeast, including schools in Guildford and Waverley and to theatres across the UK, Europe and Asia. We've had five seasons in the West End, and several national tours in collaboration with the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford and independent commercial producers.

Information, including photos and videos of our work can be found at http://piedpipertheatre.co.uk/shows.php

WHY IS OUR WORK IMPORTANT?

We aim to begin a lifelong love of theatre.

Live theatre feeds not only the imaginations and creativity of our young audience - it allows them to access and talk about emotions, to develop empathy, tolerance and bonds with those they experience it alongside.

It also develops language and communication skills.

Providing what is for many their first ever experience of theatre is a responsibiity we take seriously. We are committed to making that experience as creative, original, high quality and exciting as possible.

QUALITY

We know from experience that the artistic quality of theatre that tours into schools varies enormously, as does the pay and treatment of artists involved.

By touring the same 'theatre quality' shows into schools and community spaces, we allow audiences unable to visit theatre venues for reasons of accessibility (financial, physical or geographical) to share in the same high-quality experience they equally deserve.

We pay our actors Equity rates, and our creatives the rates set out as best practive by the ITC (Independent Theatre Council.) We are proud to be ITC Ethical Managers.

ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT

Pied Piper works with a core creative team who have the ethos of the company at heart and are passionate about our work, the needs of our audience and the possibilities of finding new ways of telling compelling stories.

Each year the core team are joined by a group of actors, typically young/emerging talent who have recently trained.

Our work is collaborative, our role in mentoring emerging artists and the ongoing creative development of those more established is at the heart of what we do. Over several years we have been developing a working model where each member of the cast and creative team has an equal voice in the rehearsal room.

We offer relaxed performances welcoming audience members with learning disabilities, Down's Syndrome, Autism or sensory and communication disorders.

In support of this we create a full information pack for parents and venues detailing the production. Audience members are also given a chance to meet the cast beforehand. We will visit schools with children with disabilities, including wheel chair users, removing issues potentially preventing them accessing the arts, eg. those created by having to take a coach to a venue.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL

In order to create our high quality work, ethically employ actors and creatives, and be able to reach a diverse audience we need your help.

Our performance prices have to be affordable to schools and families coming into theatres.

It seems more vital than ever that we are able to mitigate ticket prices through funding as school and family budgets grow ever tighter.

For each production we ask the Arts Council for a proportion of our costs. However, this funding is becoming more competitive year on year as other funding sources for the arts are cut.

The success of each Arts Council bid relies on us finding a proportion of the cost from alternative funders.

Without this vital support we will not be able to continue as a  company.

YOUR HELP

Can you help us continue to bring this important and enriching experience to young audiences?

We are looking for help to:

Support performances in schools who would not otherwise be able to afford live theatre.

Support performers - help to provide accommodation costs allowing us to ethically employ the best actor for each role - regardless of where they live. This support is particularly vital in allowing us to maintain a diverse casting policy.

Support our education and access work - help us to continue to create education and family packs to run alongside our work at no extra charge to the user, as well as the materials required for relaxed performances.

Thank you for your support and good luck!

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Annabel Foster
