About our cause

Our charity’s aim is to take theatre into the community that makes an impact, having a particular focus on using theatre as a form of therapy.  Our work focuses on reaching out to marginalised groups such as the elderly, people with learning difficulties and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What makes life for older people worth living? That is one of the questions that Age UK has been attempting to answer through their recent research on wellbeing. The strongest message from the research was the importance of maintaining meaningful engagement with the world around you in later life. Most striking was their finding that creative and cultural participation was the single factor that contributed the most out of all 40 of the factors they found to significantly contribute to wellbeing. Follow-up qualitative research they carried out showed that, even for people with very low wellbeing overall, having something creative to do really helps. Creative and cultural participation is important to older people: we need to promote it, enable older people to access it, and increase the opportunities to take part.

We would like the opportunity to offer the elderly groups in the Borough of Guildford that we work with the chance to have one of our Summer Shows visit their centres for free this June or July. We have worked within the Borough of Guildford for the last 20 years, and have a database of over 30 regular venues we visit. We would target the larger council or charity run care homes and day centres that would struggle to afford it.

The two shows we would like to offer are our Country Roads - Take Me Home featuring Cow Boys and Girls who sing and dance their way through all the Country and Western greatest hits and “Summer Singing Sensations”, a collection of ‘feel good’ summer songs with 3 part harmonies and a comic through line.

The managing director, whilst training to be an actor, worked as an activity organiser in a care home for Bupa; she saw firsthand what her elderly service users enjoyed and wanted to be involved in. A basic human need is to connect with others which is why our shows are designed with audience interaction in mind to create a unique memorable experience. We regularly see the therapeutic benefits of the Arts and are often told after shows by surprised care staff that a dementia sufferer who has not spoken in months, for example, has sung along and then held a conversation afterwards or those that would normally need a wheel chair have got up and danced with one of our actors.

We know there is a need for our project due to the feedback we regularly receive. For example:  “It was spectacular. I loved joining in the songs, my neighbours also thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I was so emotional I shed a few tears.” “The Residents really enjoyed it, the second floor in particular who were singing and dancing along. Thank you so much for arranging this and giving them some enjoyment in these difficult times!” “My Dad due to his dementia has barely said a word since lockdown started. Yesterday I watched with tears in my eyes as he sang along to all the songs the fabulous group were singing. I will never forget this very special moment!”. “Some of our residents have been experiencing difficult times, made harder by the upcoming festive season and to see and hear how much they enjoy your shows is a wonderful thing.” “I went to all three shows and still laughed at the jokes and enjoyed seeing our residents getting interactive with the performers!”
